I go to a tire shop about an hour away, show up and ask for an alignment. I get quoted for an hour wait. An hour an a half later I'm told That I can't get an alignment until I get some new bushings.

Yeah, I've had that happen. Sometimes I just want them to do what I ask, not tell me about all the money I could be spending.

Problem is if you're bushings are too worn, the alignment won't hold. You'll be wasting your money on the alignment.

I get that, but I just wanted the steering wheel to not be so far off center at the time. And spend the least amount of money possible.

If the car is driving straight and only the steering wheel is crooked, you can pull the steering wheel off yourself and straighten it. What kind of car is it?

It doesn't matter anymore because the car was totaled, but the alignment on my Neon was out just a tiny bit. Wouldn't pull until well into texas highway speeds, but the wheel was just far enough out of alignment to bug me (mild OCD tendencies).

Mine is like that, too, and I love it when I get a slight left turn that's juuuust right for me to hold the wheel straight.

I had that problem. My steering wheel was way off centre. I went for an alignment they told me I needed new struts. Turns out they were right. The entire suspension was collapsed and the car was sitting on it's bump stops.

An off-centre wheel is usually the result of a misadjusted or damaged component in the steering system. Pulling the wheel off and putting it back on somewhere else will make the problem worse, because then there's no reference for what centre should be. You'll end up with a NASCAR-style steering setup that turns much further in one direction than the other.

Very true. But if you're trying to cut costs and already cruising around on worn out bushings, you can straighten the wheel yourself. Obviously the correct thing to do would be to replace your bushings, and properly set up your suspension.
